Minimum Requirements:
- Age:
- Not less than 21 years
- Citizenship:
- United States Citizenship
- Education:
- At least 60 credit hours toward a college degree -or-
- Two (2) years of policing experience with a law enforcement agency -or-
- Two (2) years of military experience with honorable discharge
- Police Academy and Certification:
- A candidate may apply for the position of police officer without having graduated from a state approved training academy and passing a state certification test. However, candidates who have graduated from a state approved training academy and passed a state certification test are preferred.
- Good Moral Character:
- Possess good moral character as determined by a favorable comprehensive background investigation covering school and employment records, home environment, and personal traits and integrity. Consideration will be given to all law violations, including traffic and conservation law convictions, as indicating a lack of good character.
- Driver’s License:
- Possess a valid Operator’s or chauffeur’s License issued in the United States of America with no more than four (4) points on their current driving record.
Application and Selection Process:
When the Police Department has a hiring need, we pull a list of eligible candidates from EMPCO and invite those that meet our criteria to apply. To ensure you are included on our EMPCO list, please create an EMPCO account and select Shelby Township as a preferred employer. Register to take EMPCO’s written exam and pass it with 70% or higher. Invitations to apply and any other correspondence will be sent to the email on file with EMPCO.
Applicants that fully complete an application and pass the EMPCO written exam with 70 % or higher will be invited to participate in the oral panel exam. Those that pass the oral panel with 70 % or higher will be included on the eligibility list ranked by combining the written exam and oral panel scores. The top 5 ranks will be called to interview with the department for each position that is open.
Applicants must successfully pass the background check, phycological exam, physical MCOLES exam, and drug screen.
Only those candidates selected for an interview will be contacted by the Human Resource Department.
